J2EE / Java 2 Enterprise Edition for Not Yet Techies"Computer Careers: Using Sun Microsystems' Standard Framework for Creating Distributed Software Applications for Large Businesses"by Richard Stooker, President Info Ring Press and author of Secrets of Changing to a Computer Career |

J2EE / Java 2 Enterprise Edition is a standard created by Sun Microsystems for creating enterprise-level distributed computer applications. It operates server-side - with J2EE / Java 2 Enterprise Edition you can create multiple, n-tier software programs. J2EE / Java 2 Enterprise Edition meets the modern need for businesses to have software programs that operate throughout the business network. This will now usually include the Internet, maybe the company's intranet, maybe an extranet with outside business partners -- not to mention relational database management systems, storage area networks and on and on. Twenty years ago, large businesses used mainframe computers -- everything important from the program and the data was on the one central mainframe and it was accessed throughout the business via dumb terminals. Some years ago, large businesses switched to using personal computers on the desks of their employees plus large computer servers. Now, all business resources are networked together in Local Area Networks (LAN) hooked up the company wide global Wide Area Networks (WAN) and hooked up to the Internet and other networks. This is n-tier computing. Tiers referred to physical separation of machines. Ordinary software programs created to work on just one machine just don't cut the mustard anymore. That's why Sun Microsystems created J2EE / Java 2 Enterprise Edition - to create modern business solutions that are secure, scalable and available. When their new language first came out, its most immediate use was the creation of small programs called applets that ran on web site visitors' computers. But Sun knew it was destined for much bigger and better things and with J2EE / Java 2 Enterprise Edition has turned it into a framework to support modern business computing -- in competition with Microsoft's .NET Framework. In n-tier applications the Presentation Logic, Business Logic and Data Access Logic of programs is broken up into separate machines. Most web businesses are now 3-tier programs. In J2EE / Java 2 Enterprise Edition, companies create application servers according to Sun MicroSystem's specificationsThese server provide containers. The containers hold components. Also included is J2SE / Java 2 Standard Edition. The containers in J2EE / Java 2 Enterprise Edition include:
The components included are:
J2EE / Java 2 Enterprise Edition Blueprints are a collection of best practices for companies to use as a guide to implementing solutions. One advantage of J2EE / Java 2 Enterprise Edition over Microsoft's .NET is that you can use it with any operating system. Next: Cg C for Graphics |
