Evernet for Not Yet Techies"Computer Careers: In the Near Future When We Are All Connected to the Internet 24/7"by Richard Stooker, President Info Ring Press and author of Secrets of Changing to a Computer Career |
|
Evernet is a term used by people who have envisioned the future of the Internet as a convergence of wireless, broadband and Internet telephony technologies that will enable all of us to be online continuously for the rest of our lives, no matter where we are or what we're doing. Whether we want to be or not. Evernet in a sense means surfing the Net -- forever. Technology is advancing to the point where this Evernet will become possible. Small handheld computers are merging with cell phones and eventually we'll all have the computing power we need continuously strapped to our belts or carried in our purses -- or maybe wired directly into our brains. This Evernet will require a vast increase in wireless broadband capabilities but it's only a matter of timeThe 4G wireless generation will take us a long way to continuous online capabilities. We're not the only ones who'll be constantly online this Evernet - it also refers to the capabilities of our environment. Our cars will not only be in constant contact with a GPS system, they will be wired constant traffic updates, and maybe want us to send our planned destinations to a central control station to plan to avoid traffic jams. While we're driving home, we can send a wireless message to our oven to start warming up our dinner. We'll tap into the video web cam watching our children to see what they're up to. If we forgot to pre-cook something for the oven to heat up, we can send a message to the nearest Domino's to deliver a pizza. The possibilities of Evernet are many and wonderful, and scary to a certain extent -- I'm glad that when I was a teenager my mother couldn't call me every 10 minutes or track my position with a GPS chip in the phone!
