EPOC for Not Yet Techies

"Computer Careers: Working With This 32-Bit Operating System for Small Handheld and Embedded Devices"

by Richard Stooker, President Info Ring Press and author of Secrets of Changing to a Computer Career

EPOC is a 32-bit multitasking operating system that supports pen-based graphical user interfaces (GUIs) -- such as small handheld computers, computer-telephones with wireless access and other personal digital assistants / PDAs. The name comes from the original company's (Psion) belief in "a new epoch of personal convenience." EPOC now adds wireless communication and application program architecture to their original systems.

EPOC is written in C++ and its code is so compact it fits on a single ROM chip

It can be scaled from fully functional handheld computers to small embedded systems programming applications. Its competition is basically the original Palm OS and Microsoft's Windows CE.

Symbian now licenses EPOC, which comes with an application suite of programs including a word processor, email program, spreadsheet program, scheduling, spell checker, database, sketch program, world clock, voice recorder, calculator and web browser. You can also download free and shareware programs developed for it.

The preferred platform for EPOC is the Advanced RISC Machines (ARM).
