Debian Linux is an open source operating system using the Linux kernel. So it is basically another implementation of Linux, and also uses program elements available for the open source GNU project. Debian Linux is freely available through download or is available on CD-ROM for a small charge. There are at least 500 programmers who contribute to developing this operating system through the Project. However, work is in progress to provide Debian Linux for other kernels, primarily for the Hurd, a collection of servers that run on top of a microkernel (such as Mach) to implement different features. The Hurd is free software produced by the GNU project. Debian Linux runs on nearly all makes of personal computers, including most older modelsYou can run it with Windows, so you don't have to give up the benefit of having the most common operating system, with the many software programs available for Windows. It needs only 500 mg, a small space on today's 100 gigabyte+ hard drives. Plus, there are over 8000 free, downloadable programs available for it. Ian Murdock started Debian Linux in 1993. The term came from him combining his first name and his wife's, Debra. It has the basic advantages of Linux over Windows, especially stability -- reportedly there are computers which have run for over a year without needing rebooting. Next: EPOC |
