cXML / Commerce XML for Not Yet Techies

"Computer Careers: Working With This XML Standard for the Online Exchange of Business Information and Transactions"

by Richard Stooker, President Info Ring Press and author of Secrets of Changing to a Computer Career

cXML / Commerce XML is an emerging standard for the online exchange of business transaction information. It has been available since February 1999. cXML / Commerce XML is easy to implement and is the most widely adopted business to business / B2B protocol.

XML / Commerce XML is a "streamlined protocol intended for consistent communication of business documents between procurement applications, e-commerce hubs and suppliers." It can be expanded through the use of Extrinsic elements and newly-defined domains for various identifiers.

The effort to create and define the document type definition / DTD of cXML / Commerce XML was led by Ariba Technologies and more than 40 other companies collaborated on it

It is to give online businesses a common form of interaction. EDI / Electronic Data Interchange used to do this but it requires point to point mapping and so is not suitable for the Internet. These business processes include purchase orders, change orders, acknowledgments, status updates, ship notifications and payment transactions.

These are the cXML / Commerce XML basics.
