CASE / Computer Aided Software Engineering for Not Yet Techies"Computer Careers: Working With Automation Tools to Help You Develop Software Program Application"by Richard Stooker, President Info Ring Press and author of Secrets of Changing to a Computer Career |
|
CASE / Computer Aided Software Engineering is a concept that goes back many years. Basically, the programming of software is detail-oriented and somewhat repetitive work. In short, the kind of work that computers were themselves invented to automate and thereby save us from doing it. Businesses thought about the amount of money they paid their programmers and decided it would be nice to buy a piece of software for a one-time expense and then fire their programmers, eliminating the expenses of their on-going salaries. So CASE / Computer Aided Software Engineering was invented as software which could create other software programs. Since many programmers still work for businesses and other organizations developing applications for businesses, games etc., it could be said that CASE / Computer Aided Software Engineering has failed. Nobody has yet created a program smart enough to understand user needs and know enough to design an entire program from scratch. In some ways, CASE / Computer Aided Software Engineering has succeeded, at least on the lower levels of programmingMost programmers now use an Integrated Development Environment / IDE, which is a GUI program, for developing applications. They don't write code line by line any more. They save time and work by using pre-written components, objects and libraries. Their job is to focus on knowing what's available to them and then combining these components into a program that does what they need it to. They can focus more on the business logic than on managing memory. CASE / Computer Aided Software Engineering has helped to bring about these innovations and time savers. There are many CASE / Computer Aided Software Engineering tools available. They can help programmers and undoubtedly improve their productivity so that companies to not have to pay a lot of programmers just to re-code the same old wheels, but have not yet learned how to write a complete large scale, distributed computing application for a modern large business. Those are the CASE / Computer Aided Software Engineering basics. Next: J2EE |
