AGP / Accelerated Graphics Port for Not Yet Techies

"Computer Careers: Working With a High Speed Connection for Loading 3D Images"

by Richard Stooker, President Info Ring Press and author of Secrets of Changing to a Computer Career

AGP / Accelerated Graphics Port is an interface specification to enhance the display speed and quality on PCs. 3-D images, whether on a CD-ROM or a web site, are much more complex and detailed than ordinary two dimensional images, and so are much larger files and require much more than ordinary processing power. The AGP / Accelerated Graphics Port uses your RAM.

By providing a high memory bandwidth "fast lane" for graphics data, AGP / Accelerated Graphics Port enables the hardware-accelerated graphics controller to execute texture maps directly from system memory. Normally, it would cache them in the limited local video memory. It also helps speed the flow of decoded video from the CPU to the graphics controller.

AGP / Accelerated Graphics Port refreshes the image on your monitor and supports these technologies necessary for displaying 3D images:

  • Texture mapping
  • Z-Buffering
  • Alpha blending

Intel built AGP / Accelerated Graphics Port support into its Pentium microprocessors. It is a platform bus specification to enable high performance display of 3D images - providing a dedicated, high speed port.

Intel says that AGP / Accelerated Graphics Port technology, combined with their Pentium® 4 processor delivers "performance across applications and usages demanded by end users." Applications include:

  • Streaming video
  • Image processing
  • Video content creation
  • 3D
  • CAD
  • Games
  • Multimedia

These are the AGP / Accelerated Graphics Port basics.
