by Richard Stooker, President Info Ring Press and author of Secrets of Changing to a Computer Career

Security+ certification from:

Security+ certification from CompTIA is for those IT pros looking to get started in one of the most important areas of info technology - security. The CompTIA Security+ certification exam is targeted at "professionals with at least two years of networking experience and possess a thorough knowledge of TCP/IP."

Type of CompTIA Security+ certification for computer careers:

Cross Platform

CompTIA Security+ certification worth it?

Standard disclaimer:

Whether or not any certification is "worth it" is an individual decision. You alone must decide what your career goals and needs are.

Look at certifications from a cost/benefit or Return On Investment (ROI) basis. If they help you get a better paying job or make more money at your current job, they are obviously "worth it."

The problem is, there is no real way of measuring how much you can expect your income to go up as a result of any given certification. It also depends on non-related job search skills such as how well you network.

CompTIA Security+ certification background:

The CompTIA Security+ certification is is not an entry-level certification to get into the IT industry, but is an entry-level certification for those who have some networking experience and who want to get into the growing area of security.

Anybody online should understand by now that security is an ever-growing issue. I don't download my email anymore, because it's so full of viruses. Even those of us still using dialup connections need firewall protection to stop attacks while online -- those of you on DSL or cable really need protection. Businesses and government are constantly the targets of hackers.

I had to stop taking orders for my book Secrets of Changing to a Computer career through a regular credit card merchant account because overseas scammers were using my order page to test out credit card numbers. (That's my belief, anyway. Since they did not give valid email addresses, I don't think they were trying to steal my book, just looking for a credit card number they could use.)

The areas on the tests are:

1.0 General Security Concepts 30%
2.0 Communication Security 20%
3.0 Infrastructure Security 20%
4.0 Basics of Cryptography 15%
5.0 Operational/Organizational Security 15%

The CompTIA Security+ certification exam consists of 100 questions and takes 90 minutes. The minimum passing score is 764, on a scale of 100 - 900.
