SCP certifications worth it?

Standard disclaimer:

Whether or not any certification is "worth it" is an individual decision. You alone must decide what your career goals and needs are.

Look at certifications from a cost/benefit or Return On Investment (ROI) basis. If they help you get a better paying job or make more money at your current job, they are obviously "worth it."

The problem is, there is no real way of measuring how much you can expect your income to go up as a result of any given certification. It also depends on non-related job search skills such as how well you network.

SCP certifications background:

You must already have Security+ or equivalent work experience. SCP certifications can help anyone working with networks since this area is getting more important on a daily basis and that trend shows no sign of stopping any time in the mid future.

The first level concentrates on defense. It is the Security Certified Network Professional (SCNP). You must pass two multiple choice exams.

The first SCP certifications exam is the Hardening The Infrastructure (HTI).

The second SCP certifications exam is the Network Security Defense and Countermeasures (NDC)

It covers:

  • Securing Windows and Linux operating systems
  • Advanced TCP/IP
  • Security Fundamentals
  • Security Implementation
  • Router Security
  • Attack Methods
  • Firewalls
  • Intrusion Detection Systems
  • VPNs Virtual Private Networks
  • Risk Analysis

The second is the Security Certified Network Architect (SCNA)

You must pass two exams. The first exam covers advanced security implementations:

  • Cryptography Fundamentals
  • Digital Signatures
  • Biometric Fundamentals
  • PKI Fundamentals
  • PKI Solutions
  • File Encryption Solutions
  • Deploying a Certificate Server
  • Secure E-Mail Implementation

The second SCP certifications exam for the SCNA is the TSE (The Solution Exam) and covers security scenarios.
