MSF Practitioner credential worth it?

Standard disclaimer:

Whether or not any certification is "worth it" is an individual decision. You alone must decide what your career goals and needs are.

Look at certifications from a cost/benefit or Return On Investment (ROI) basis. If they help you get a better paying job or make more money at your current job, they are obviously "worth it."

The problem is, there is no real way of measuring how much you can expect your income to go up as a result of any given certification. It also depends on non-related job search skills such as how well you network.

MSF Practitioner credential background:

The MSF Practitioner credential is earned by passing the MSF Practitioner exam (074-100).

The Microsoft Solutions Framework (MSF) represents Microsoft's proven practices for planning, building, and deploying technology solutions successfully. It deals in the areas of building teams, a proven project life cycle, project processes and activities, and risk management.

The MSF Practitioner credential course 1846A: MSF Essentials lasts three days and provides an introduction to the Microsoft Solutions Framework (MSF)

The key elements include:

  • The MSF Team and Process models
  • Risk Management
  • Project Management
  • Readiness Management

Students will learn how to:

  • Explain how an improved solution strategy can alleviate the challenges to delivering technology solutions
  • Describe how the MSF team model is used on an MSF project
  • Discuss the concept of MSF role clusters
  • Explain how MSF teams are scaled depending on project size and complexity
  • Explain project management on MSF teams
  • Explain how the risk management discipline is applied to an MSF project
  • Explain the MSF envisioning phase
  • Explain how to ensure that the solution meets initial business goals and requirements
  • Describe how the team plans what to build
  • Explain the MSF developing phase
  • Explain the MSF stabilizing phase
  • Describe the tasks involved in testing and piloting a solution
  • Explain the MSF deploying phase
  • Describe the tasks involved in deploying to a production environment
  • Describe the tasks involved in completing a project

Unlike other Microsoft certification options, this MSF Practitioner credential endorsement doesn't require technical knowledge of the the workings of specific Microsoft products

The exam focuses on "measuring knowledge of and ability to apply MSF concepts, principles, models, and disciplines; it is not a measurement of specific product knowledge. It is designed to be technology agnostic."

The MSF Practitioner credential exam consists of approximately 70 multiple choice type questions in 90 minutes.
