Whether or not any certification is "worth it" is an individual decision. You alone must decide what your career goals and needs are.

Look at certifications from a cost/benefit or Return On Investment (ROI) basis. If they help you get a better paying job or make more money at your current job, they are obviously "worth it."

The problem is, there is no real way of measuring how much you can expect your income to go up as a result of any given certification. It also depends on non-related job search skills such as how well you network.

IWA webmaster certifications background:

The purposes of the IWA webmaster certifications program (Certified Web Professional or CWP) are:

To further the effectiveness of the services rendered to the public by the Web profession
To achieve the aims of the association by providing recognition to those practitioners who have attained unquestioned professional status in a single discipline based on examination, professionalism, and experience. Members who become Certified Web Professionals will be considered certified members, the highest level of IWA membership that can be achieved.

CWP certification levels.

There are three levels of IWA webmaster certifications (CWP - Certified Web Professional):

CWP Specialist
Master CWP Certification Tracks

CWP Specialist Certification Tracks:

CWP Site Designer
CWP Server Administrator
CWP E-Commerce Specialist
CWP Internetworking Specialist
CWP Enterprise Developer
CWP Security Specialist
CWP Application Developer
CWP Database Specialist
CWP Security Analyst
CWP Web Developer

Master CWP Certification Tracks:

Master CWP Administrator
Master CWP Designer
Master CWP Enterprise Developer
Master CWP Web Site Manager (new)

CWP REQUIREMENTS

Be a member in good standing of the International Webmaster Association
Experience: CWP Associate - No experience required. CWP Specialist - Candidates must work full-time for a period of two (2) years in a given specialization as one of the following: practitioner, reviewer or supervisor within the last five (5) years. Master CWP Specialist - Candidates must work full-time for a period of five (5) years in a given specialization as one of the following: practitioner, reviewer or supervisor within the last nine (9) years.
Successfully pass the IWA approved industry examination * of chosen discipline(s).

IWA webmaster certifications do require you to take Prosoft's CIW - Certified Internet Webmaster exams.

IWA webmaster certifications have more requirements than Certified Internet Webmaster, but has the same knowledge base as CIW.

To get the IWA-CWP Webmaster Certification, you have to have same knowledge as a CIW graduate and fulfill other requirements. These are: Experience (2 yrs), Professionalism (IWA membership), and Continuing Education (meaning you will need to take at least 30 hours of approved courses every three years to maintain the webmaster certification once you've achieved it).

Therefore, to get the IWA webmaster certifications you automatically fulfill all of the requirements for CIW certification too, giving you two certifications for the price of one.
