Cisco optical certifications worth it?

Standard disclaimer:

Whether or not any certification is "worth it" is an individual decision. You alone must decide what your career goals and needs are.

Look at certifications from a cost/benefit or Return On Investment (ROI) basis. If they help you get a better paying job or make more money at your current job, they are obviously "worth it."

The problem is, there is no real way of measuring how much you can expect your income to go up as a result of any given certification. It also depends on non-related job search skills such as how well you network.

Cisco optical certifications background:

My personal opinion is that fiber optical networks are the wave of the future, although there'll continue to be a place (though shrinking) for copper wire networks. Cisco is a proven and respected manufacturer of network hardware and this Cisco Optical Specialist certification is a sign that they understand the technological changes that are coming and plan to remain the premier manufacturer of network hardware whether it's for copper wires or fiber optics.

The Cisco Optical Specialist 1 is for people who "design, install, configure, operate, and maintain optical networking systems. The focus is on Cisco optical products as they are applied in a metro and regional environments."

Technologies and protocols covered by Cisco optical certifications include:

  • SONET/SDH
  • DWDM
  • DPT/RPR
  • POS optical cross connects
  • Ethernet over optical
  • element management

You must pass one Cisco Optical Specialist certification exam: #9E0-611. The certification will remain valid for two years after passing the exam. These are the Cisco optical certifications basics.
